Modern Understanding Of The Body
- Greeks made a language like for example- telephone is made up of Greek words
- Telo= far away and and Phone= voice
- This is important because of how we still use the alphabet in our lives
- Made it easier for other cultures because it helped them develop languages
- Ally = a country or a group that's joins with one another
- Appoint = to choose someone to fill an office or a position
- Geometry = the branch of mathematics involving points lines planes and figures
- Drama = the art of writing acting in and producing plays
- Philosophy = the search for wisdom or knowledge
- Cavalry = soldiers who ride on horse
- (These are some of the words Greek people have created)
Contributions and Modern Government
- Had many different governments
- Democracy- 500 B.C.E and was ruled “by the people”
- Tyranny- mid 600 B.C.E, cannot claim that he has a legal right to rule, and a tyrant’s son does not inherit his father’s rule
- Oligarchy- 800 B.C.E ruled by a small group of wealthy men.
- Monarchy- from 2000 B.C.E and 800 B.C.E, in this government the ruling power is only ead by one person, a king

- Greeks thought gods gave people sicknesses because Greeks thought they were punishments sent to them
- Hippocrates- A greek man who changed the way people thought about health/medicine
- Hippocrates believed diseases have natural causes
- Taught his students to observe their patients and write down what they saw
- Hippocrates is known for “The Father Of Medicine”
- Today people who become doctors take the Hippocratic Oath
- Means- to be honest, to preserve life and to keep keep information about their patients private
Modern Understanding Of The Body
- Their interest in athletics gave them some knowledge about how the body works in many different ways
- Their understanding in bodies was limited because they couldn't see inside the human body
- The early greeks believed that cutting into people open will offend the gods.
- Hippocrates, medical students were able to name and describe the organs inside the human bodies.
- First Olympics were held in 776 B.C.E (to honor the Greek God Zeus)
- Today’s Olympics reflect on Ancient Greek Customs
- Today we still light the Olympic Flame ( In Greece, they lit the flame on an altar of Zeus
- Greeks help Pentathlons
- Examples of the Pentathlons or “five contests”- Footrace, Discus Throw, Long Jump, Javelin Throw and wrestling
- Although, the contents are different, the pentathlon is still an Olympic
